Lenovo drops caps lock key in redesign of slim ThinkPad X1 Carbon

The new ThinkPad X1 Carbon comes with a keyboard that drops the physical function keys

ThinkPad loyalists will have to do without the traditional caps lock and function keys on the brand's newest laptop.

At the International CES show in Las Vegas, Lenovo has been showing the latest model of its ThinkPad X1 Carbon device, a notebook that weighs less than 1.3 kilograms (3 pounds) and has nine hours of battery life.

In making the laptop, Lenovo focused on creating a thinner and lighter device. It also streamlined the keyboard interface, removing the long series of physical function keys normally found at the top of a keyboard.

In its place, the company's fitted a long "adaptive display," a touchscreen that can emulate different keys depending on the usage mode. This can include becoming function keys or buttons to toggle the PC's volume and brightness. A user can easily cycle among the different modes with the tap of an adjacent button.

Another change is that Lenovo has removed the caps lock key on the new laptop. Instead, users simply double tap the shift key to go into caps lock mode.

On Wednesday, Dilip Bhatia, general manager for the ThinkPad business unit, acknowledged that the new design features might not sit well with all fans of the laptop series. But Lenovo is confident the X1 Carbon's keyboard offers the best user experience.

"We are very grateful to our loyalists. They have been buying our products for a number of years," he said an interview. "But at the same time, we also have to look at emerging trends."

The ThinkPad brand, initially created by IBM and later acquired by Lenovo, has been around for more than 20 years, with its laptop keyboards hailed as some of the best in the market.

However, those keyboards have evolved over the years. In 2012, Lenovo began replacing the classic square-ish keys with more curved "chiclet" buttons, a change that prompted some dismay among fans of the brand.

"When we changed the keyboard, there was a lot of feedback from our loyalists, saying, 'Hey, what have you done? I want my old keyboard back,'" Bhatia said. But later industry reviews judged the new keyboards to be superior to the old, he added.

Bhatia said he was personally proud of removing the caps lock button from the keyboard. Already, users are accustomed to double-clicking the virtual shift button on their tablets to go into caps lock mode.

"You do that on tablets already, so we brought that same experience over here," he said.

In addition to the keyboard changes, Lenovo has added several gesture controls to the X1 Carbon. With simple hand movements in front of the computer's webcam, a user can issue commands to the PC without touching the keyboard. For example, by placing an index finger over one's mouth, a user can signal the laptop to silence itself. Other motions include moving to different slides on a presentation with the swipe of a hand.

In the future, the gesture controls will be integrated into other ThinkPad devices as the technology matures, Bhatia said. But the new keyboard design could end up being exclusive to the X1 Carbon, depending on user feedback.

Intel set to bring DDR4 DRAM to computers in third quarter

Intel will add support for DDR4 memory to its high-end computers in the third quarter, sources familiar with the company's plans said.

The new DDR4 memory, which has been under development for more than five years, will speed up computer performance while reducing power consumption. It will also mean a progressive slowdown in the adoption of DDR3 memory, which currently goes into most laptops, tablets and servers.

The adoption of DDR4 by chip makers at the motherboard and chip level is the first step to bringing the new memory type to computers. DDR4 chip support will come with Intel's next-generation Xeon server processors code-named Grantley, which will be based on the Haswell architecture, to be released in the third quarter, sources said.

DDR4 could then make its way to laptops and PCs in 12 to 18 months. Lenovo has said it will launch new types of servers based on the Grantley chips in the third quarter.

DDR (double data rate) DRAM (dynamic random access memory) is the main volatile memory used in PCs, servers and mobile devices today. It does not retain information once a device is turned off.

Intel declined to comment on DDR4 memory support on its chips.

Modules of DDR4 memory on gaming boards with Intel's chips were demonstrated at the Intel Developer Forum in September. Intel's high-end desktop processors for gaming are also expected to support DDR4. An Intel spokesman said the company is working "with the industry" to bring support DDR4 to its high-end systems, but did not provide a date.

Laptops will be faster and get longer battery life with DDR4 memory, though the current DDR3 DRAM is considered sufficient in most cases. DDR4 provides 50 percent more bandwidth than DDR3, and 35 percent more power savings.

The new form of memory could prompt Apple to upgrade its Mac Pro, which just started shipping with the Intel's latest Xeon processors based on the Ivy Bridge microarchitecture, which supports DDR3. System builders have already been testing boards with DDR4 memory.

Mobile devices won't get DDR4 memory anytime soon since tablets and smartphones are just getting equipped using low-power DDR3 (LP-DDR3) DRAM. Memory standards-setting organization JEDEC is still developing the mobile DDR4 specification, and Samsung last week announced an LP-DDR4 module for mobile devices.

Early adopters will pay a hefty premium for DDR4, but the prices will fall as adoption grows. Analysts expect a 30 percent price premium on DDR4 memory over DDR3, which could drop to 10 percent in 2015.

Some of the first applications for DDR4 will likely be in high-end database and ERP (enterprise resource planning) programs, which are increasingly utilizing in-memory processing. The memory will also be beneficial for complex calculations in supercomputers.

"It will only get used in places where the performance is necessary," said Dean McCarron, principal analyst at Mercury Research. "It won't be in low-end web servers."

The adoption of DDR4 was delayed as DDR3 DRAM prices stabilized last year. Higher margins prompted memory makers like SK Hynix and Samsung to continue making DDR3 instead of moving over production capacity to DDR4, which would have been more expensive to make. Memory makers also delayed DDR4 after demand for PCs fell. In addition, Intel and Advanced Micro Devices delayed DDR4 adoption after the emergence of ultrabooks, which use low-power DDR3 memory.

Companies like Samsung, Micron and Kingston demonstrated DDR4 memory after the DRAM specification was finalized in September 2012. Samsung has already started manufacturing the memory for commercial use, and Micron's Crucial business unit is demonstrating DDR4 memory at the International CES show being held this week in Las Vegas.

The DDR4 bus clock speed will top out at 3200MHz, an improvement from 2400MHz for DDR3, and 1.2 volts will be supplied for DDR4 compared to 1.5 volts for DDR3. DDR4 reliability is considered higher because of more debugging and diagnostic tools to prevent data errors.

DDR4 is expected to be the final iteration of DDR DRAM. There is a move to others forms of non-volatile memory that can retain data. Alternative forms of memory under development include phase-change memory, RRAM (resistive RAM) and MRAM (magnetoresistive RAM). Memory makers like Micron are also stacking chips to deliver faster throughput, and Nvidia plans to stack memory chips in its upcoming graphics chip code-named Volta.

The life expectancy of a laptop battery or desktop hard drive

Our laptops and desktops have become a lifeline to work, social networking and day-to-day activities. So when either breaks down, it can feel like our entire world is crumbling. You want to do all you can to ensure that they are functioning at top speed, to avoid the unimaginable: a complete and utter breakdown and system failure. The average life expectancy on a laptop battery or a desktop hard drive is approximately three to five years; however this can vary depending on the living conditions you provide for both electronics.

How do you go about extending the lives of your laptop’s battery or desktop’s hard drive? Here are some simple tips:
•    Avoid dropping your laptop or computer’s hard drive. A laptop or hard drive that is moved around back and forth every day probably won’t last as long as if they were left in one area most of the time. This movement isn’t usually enough to hurt a battery or hard drive, but just like anything else, abuse and repetition are not going to help extend their life span.
•    Keep your laptop and hard drive reasonably cool. Heat can cause many problems, like parts to expand or become loose; and these factors can greatly increase their wear and tear. Therefore try to avoid overheating your laptop and desktop by ensuring that the cooling fan is in an open spot, not too close to anyplace where dust bunnies can linger.
•    Do not keep these electronics plugged in at all times. If you are not using your laptop or computer, simply turn them off.
•    Regular maintenance check-ups are an excellent way to prevent any future mishaps. Therefore, whether you have a desktop or laptop: it may be in dire need of a general clean up!
If your computer is in need of a tune-up, think iRepair.ca! They help thousands of people with electronic repairs and tune-ups without breaking the bank or a long wait. While they are the largest iPhone & iPod repair company in Canada, their repair services also include computers, laptops (PC or Mac), tablets and smartphones.

Pelican ProGear Vault for iPad Air and iPad mini

Available for both the iPad Air ($100) and iPad mini ($80), Pelican's ProGear Vault case is a different take on heavy-duty protectors. It's one of the few such cases with a folio rather than playthrough design, but can transform into the latter as needed. ProGear Vault is a full conversion kit, requiring you to unscrew and rescrew the parts every time you want to install or remove your tablet. Once inside, the iPad is heavily protected, with military-grade drop protection, a dust and dirt seal, and protection from momentary liquid immersion.

Apart from obvious size differences, the iPad Air and mini cases are highly similar. In fact, other than some color swaps here and there, the biggest difference we found was when it came to installation. Both cases require you to use an included hex wrench to unscrew the screws, and then put them back in place. On the iPad mini version of the case, there are six screws, but on the full-sized version, you’ll have to fuss with 15 screws. Six is an annoyance, but 15 is crazy, especially if you ever have to take the iPad out of the case. Each case lets you remove the lid using the same wrench, though you actually must take the lid off to install the larger iPad.

Inside ProGear Vault, the iPad is protected by sturdy materials that should help prevent significant damage, including rubber lining the inside. Not only is the body of the device covered, but so are the ports, buttons, bezel, and even the rear camera. Starting at the top edge, there’s a rubber protector for the headphone port, special grates over the microphones, and a hard plastic protector for the Sleep/Wake button. This button becomes hard to press on the larger case, but it’s just about right on the mini. Then, there’s glass over the rear camera, a flip open side switch protector, and a segment of rubber that effectively transplants the volume buttons to the back of the case, where they remain responsive. On the outer edges, there’s one more port protector for the Lightning port, and a grating over the speakers. All in all, ProGear Vault offers a high level of body protection.

Two levels of coverage are found on the front of the iPad. First, the border of the case covers about half of the iPad’s bezel, and is lined with rubber to create a tight seal; there’s also rubber over the Home Button, allowing it to be protected and used normally. Then there’s the lid. Attached with two or three screws, depending on the size of the case, it has a large metal hinge. Also lined with rubber, the cover can snap shut over the screen, reinforcing the seal, but it doesn’t have auto-locking magnets. It also can’t be used as a stand.

We’re generally not fans of full conversion kit cases; unless a case is really well-designed to adjust to various situations, iPad owners will generally have reasons to remove their tables from their cases on certain occasions, which is inconvenient in kits laden with screws. If you plan on putting your iPad into a ProGear Vault and leaving it there, the experience isn’t as bad, but installation is still a pretty extended process. Compared to LifeProof’s Nüüd cases, the closet correlate, this one is cheaper, and adds the lid, but gives up a degree of waterproofing. All things considered, ProGear Vault earns a limited recommendation. The belabored conversion process is the biggest drawback, but it’s otherwise a good case with quite a bit of protection, at a relatively high price point.

In order to properly carry Dell PA-12 adapter it is suggested that you should gently pack it in your laptop bag. When you keep it in your bag make sure you role your charger properly with no sharp edges on it and no tight binding as well. But it is also very important that you should role it proper because if you will just collect the cable and you will force it in your bag, then it will surely get some damages over a period of time and you won’t be able to get a longer life from your charger.

It is also essential that you do not keep your Dell PA-12 charger with other cables. When you keep it with other cables, adapter cable gets tangled with other type of cables and this tangling not only increases the risk of damage, but it also consume more of your time. Also if you need to use it in front of other people, then it can make you feel embarrass as well and chances of other cables damage is also there due to this tangling of different cables in each other.

Also, make sure you never put your Dell adapter with any edged instrument or tool such as knife, scissor, pliers or similar things. This is one of the biggest reasons for damage of laptop adapter and these objects can cut cables of your Dell PA-12 AC adapter as well and you may lose your adapter due to improper handling.

So make sure you keep all sharp objects away from your laptop while carrying it in your laptop bag or while keeping it in your office drawer. Tips on Buying the Best Dell GW240 Battery and Adapter

Most people will opt to buy a new laptop when their Dell laptop battery GW240 or charger starts acting up. This is because the course that follows trying to replace these two parts is tedious and utterly disappointing in most cases. However, this does not have to be the case more so if you are armed with the right information and know what to look for. There are a few things you should know before you head out for you purchase.

In most cases when your charger stops working, it is the Dell GW240 adapter that is at fault. It is necessary to differentiate between the adapter and the charger. The charger is the whole cable while the Dell adapter is the little black box that connects the power cable to the charging port on your computer. For this, you need to look for two things. The first should be the DC output.

This is because, if the adapter puts out low dc voltage or high it could damage the computer therefore, it should meet the laptops power needs and standards. Secondly, check to make sure that the pin actually fits into your charging port.

If your charger is okay, but the Dell GW240 battery drains fast and takes ages to complete charging, then you need to replace that. To do this, you can either take your Dell laptop with you to the shop and find the best fit or simply take down some information. The first thing you will need to know is the precise make and model of your laptop. Having the complete or partial code of the battery could help greatly in finding the appropriate make of your battery.

To get the best battery for Dell GW240, you also need to know the voltage of your battery. Commonly, the voltages range between 7 and 11.1 volts. Contrary to common belief, it is not necessary for one to buy a replacement battery that has the exact voltage as the original. It may deviate a bit but not widely.

For instance you could use an 11.1 volts battery in the place of a 10.8 volts battery. Therefore, if you miss the precise one you wanted it is safe to try one that is in close proximity to that. You can also deviate from the number of cells that your battery holds to extend charge life for your battery. However, you need to check with your manufacturer to see if your device can support this.

Making sure you have the right Dell GW240 Battery and adapter can not only save you money but also save you the expense of going out for a new laptop and the emotional distress that comes with constantly buying substandard equipment. That is why you need tips to help steer you in the right direction.
